Weapon (dagger), very rare (requires attunement)
This wickedly sharp dagger is crafted from a strange, dark metal, with a twisted hilt that seems to pulse faintly in the wielder’s hand. The blade itself is etched with runes that shift and shimmer in dim light, whispering in forgotten tongues. Legends say it was forged by a mad mage who sought to give life to even the most grisly of wounds.
Severance of Flesh. When you score a critical hit with this dagger, you can roll a d20. On a result of 15 or higher, the dagger severs a body part (determined by the DM) from the target. This severed part immediately becomes sentient, animated, and bipedal. It retains a crude sense of its original purpose, though its newfound independence can lead to unpredictable behavior. The body part has an AC of 13, hit points equal to the hit die of the creature it was severed from, and it shares its former owner’s initiative count.
The body part will act on its own each round, choosing to flee, fight, or cause chaos, at the DM’s discretion. The sentient body part lasts for 1 hour, or until it is destroyed, after which it crumbles to dust. The body part cannot be reattached, though powerful magic like Regenerate can restore the limb.
Curse of Separation. Once per day, if the wielder rolls a natural 1 with this dagger, their own body part may be at risk of severance (at the DM’s discretion), as the blade hungers for flesh from any source.
This dagger is both feared and coveted, for while it can leave enemies maimed and disoriented, it is not without its own risks.
